Keep reading to find out how safe RF microneedling is when used to treat acne scars.

How does RF microneedling work to treat acne scars?

RF microneedling uses heat to stimulate the creation of collagen under the top layer of skin. The result is a smoother complexion, more even skin tone, and tighter skin in the treatment areas.

While the treatment may sound intimidating, a topical anesthetic is all that's needed to provide patients with a comfortable experience. A microneedling tool will be rolled gently over the skin during the treatment. The tiny needles on the roller will penetrate the skin to create "micro-injuries." When this happens, the body goes into repair mode. It produces fresh, new skin cells to cover the "wounds," and the process stimulates collagen production so that new skin is brighter and smoother.

Radiofrequency waves play an equally important role. Brief pulses of this energy are delivered into the skin via 25 sterile gold-plated microneedles on the roller. This delivers a shot of heat at the penetration point that boosts the body's natural healing response and delivers more drastic results.

The new skin helps repair pigmented spots from acne scars, as well as helping to remove or repair age spots and other discoloration. The treatment can also help smooth fine lines and wrinkles on the face. Not only do acne scars fade as the skin repairs itself, but clients are also left with enhanced tone, texture, and more youthful-looking skin.

Is RF microneedling safe?

RF microneedling is both safe and effective for treating acne scars. Moderate to severe scarring may require several treatments over the following weeks and months.

The procedure takes 30 – 60 minutes, and there is no downtime required (however, you may experience redness and swelling). After that, you'll likely see pinpoint scabs form and fall off over the next 24 – 72 hours. It's important not to pick at these scabs or allow the treatment area to get infected.

Over the following 3 – 4 weeks, the ultimate results of RF microneedling treatment will be visible. Moderate to severe skin issues may require 3 – 4 treatments in order to see optimal results. You can get RF microneedling every four weeks.

RF microneedling for acne scar repair is safe when performed by a knowledgeable and experienced provider. It's unlikely that you'll see drastic results from the standard microneedling devices available for use at home. They are also more likely to lead to infections.
