Contact UsWhat Are Birthmarks and Moles?
Dr. Hyemin Pomerantz of VivaSkin Dermatology and Aesthetics provides regular mole and birthmark checks for individuals in the Greater Needham, Natick and Wellesley, MA area. The majority of individuals currently have a mole or birthmark of some sort on their body somewhere. A mole is a growth on top of the skin that results from a cluster of pigmented cells. During mole checks, we analyze, measure, and document the dimensions, shape, and growth of moles on your body to make certain they're safe and not changing or cancerous. They may be brown, black, or a variation of the two and could appear alone or in groups. Moles may also be flush with the skin or look like round bumps. While many are benign, some may turn into cancer. If you have moles on your body and feel unsure about the severity of one or if one becomes bothersome, it's important to inform a professional — particularly when one begins to change in size or shape or starts to itch or bleed.
A birthmark is an area that differs in color or texture compared to the rest of your skin. It may appear anywhere on your body and is visible at or shortly after birth. While birthmarks are harmless, they should be examined in babies once they are noticed. A birthmark could be an indication of an underlying condition. In adults, a birthmark might cause self-consciousness because of its size or placement.
Treatment Options for Birthmarks and Moles
Usually, birthmarks and moles do not warrant treatment unless they become suspicious or cancerous or when they cause discomfort, irritation, or cosmetic issues. In these situations, Dr. Pomerantz might need to remove the mole. For surgical excision, the region around the mole is locally numbed, and a scalpel or similar tool is utilized to excise the mole and a bit of the surrounding skin cells. The wound will then be closed with sutures. Sometimes, if the mole is flush with the skin, a surgical shave can be utilized where the region is numbed, and a small blade is used to cut all around and under the mole. Stitches aren't required with this technique.
In the case of a birthmark, Dr. Pomerantz will discuss treatment choices with you. Laser therapy may fade the pigment of some birthmarks so that it is not as visible. Medications could be prescribed to shrink some types of birthmarks. For birthmarks that might eventually become skin cancer, like a mole, a surgical excision may be performed. Dr. Pomerantz uses an extremely gentle, delicate strategy for birthmark removal to minimize scarring.
VivaSkin Dermatology and Aesthetics Reviews
Saw her today. Very knowledgeable, and attentive. Great communication and did not rush.
Dr Pomerantz has been treating me for my Rosacea for a couple of years now and I wouldn't go to anyone else. She also recently treated some moles on my face which I was anxious about. After all, it's my face. She and her staff made me feel comfortable and confident in the treatment. My skin looks amazing and I'm so happy I found such a great Dr to put my trust in. For any skin care needs, I would definitely recommending 100%, making an appointment to see Dr Pomerantz at VivaSkin.
Dr. Pomerantz listened to my concerns and preferences, and treated me as an individual. Her advice has been excellent. Her personal manner and compassion are exceptional. This was by far the best medical experience in a very long time. I would recommend her with no reservation, and regret that she will no longer be practicing in my area.
very nice and does a very thorough exam and asks good questions and readily shares information about your condition
Dr. Pomerantz has been my dermatologist for several years and I am grateful for her knowledge and careful attention to my many skin issues. I'm in the club for regular full body skin exams and I feel that she is very thorough and not rushed. She takes time to explain what's going on and what's next. I highly recommend her!
