Eczema represents a series of skin conditions caused by different allergic reactions or, at times, by the human body's response to a weak immune system. The result can lead to redness of your skin and itchy patches very similar to dermatitis. Oftentimes, the redness itself is dermatitis. This may happen anywhere on your body, such as the hands, face, neck, or other regions. Atopic dermatitis is the most prevalent form and is generally the result of an allergic response. This condition normally starts in youth. At VivaSkin Dermatology and Aesthetics in Wellesley, MA, Dr. Hyemin Pomerantz will try to diagnose precisely what is causing the irritation so a true treatment plan can be produced and carried out.

Eczema can be addressed with an array of over-the-counter or prescribed medications and ointments. Hydrocortisone creams and ointments can be bought in addition to antihistamines, such as Benadryl, to help alleviate symptoms. Prescription drugs, such as steroid creams or immunomodulators, can help those with severe eczema. An oral steroid or corticosteroid may also be prescribed. In extreme cases, ultraviolet light therapy or laser therapy may also be applied to the affected regions. When other treatments have failed, immunosuppressants may be prescribed since these medications suppress the immune system.

Dr. Pomerantz has been my dermatologist for several years and I am grateful for her knowledge and careful attention to my many skin issues. I'm in the club for regular full body skin exams and I feel that she is very thorough and not rushed. She takes time to explain what's going on and what's next. I highly recommend her!
