Benign Growth

What Is A Benign Growth?

Benign growths are non-functional cell clusters that typically pose no harm and don’t spread to other regions or organs. These growths may necessitate removal if they impinge on nerves or blood vessels. They often present as waxy, scaly, or slightly elevated lesions commonly found on the face, neck, chest, or back. Types of benign growths encompass seborrheic keratoses, moles, freckles, cherry angiomas, dermatofibromas, skin tags, lipomas, among others. They can also be eliminated if their appearance is of concern.

Facing a benign growth? At VivaSkin Dermatology and Aesthetics in Wellesley, MA, we provide a range of treatments. Generally, these growths can be addressed by draining the lump or surgical removal. Our treatment methods include:

  • Cryosurgery – This involves freezing the growth with liquid nitrogen. It may not be effective for raised or thicker growths, and there’s a potential for lasting pigment loss on the skin.
  • Scraping/Shaving – This procedure uses a scalpel blade to shave off the growth from the skin’s surface, often combined with cryosurgery for thinner, flatter growths.
  • Electrocautery – This technique employs heat to destroy the growth and is often used in conjunction with scraping/shaving for thicker growths.
